How Can We Start Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?
Lee Moo-Suk

Abstract
The author described the technique ¡¯How can we start psychoanalytic psychotherapy?¡¯ Even though the patients may feel strange anxiety or shame by exposing their inner life, they visit the psychotherapist in order to be free from psychological agony by resolving their inner conflicts. The important tasks in the initial interview are to build therapeutic relationship and to get information from the patient. In order to build therapeutic alliance, the therapist should make the interview atmosphere as comfortable as possible. No criticism, no judgment, feelings of being understood and respected are needed. Sometimes the therapist¡¯s anxiety or counter transference makes the interview difficult. The author introduced the initial interviews of Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Ralph Greenson. They show us beautiful illustrations of natural, comfortable interviews. We can not find cold, aloof mirror-like screens in their interviews. But we can find spontaneous, humble, and friendly interaction between therapist and patient. The author introduced the technique of making a contract of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. ¡¯Making a contract¡¯ can also be expressed as ¡¯making a road,¡¯ a trip to the unconscious. The process of psychotherapy is easy when the contract is well made. In the ¡¯making of a contract¡¯, the therapist should respect the patient¡¯s opinion and ask about the patient¡¯s circumstances and ideas in terms of time, and session fees. The therapist should also explain the patient¡¯s role, free association and therapist¡¯s role in the psychotherapy after ¡¯making the contract¡¯.
